Solutions for regulating intestinal activity
We have some advice for treating irregular bowel movements, and improving intestinal health
Infrequent bowel movements, a bloated abdomen, and flatulence can be signs of incorrect intestinal activity. Although this is very uncomfortable for some people, it is not a condition rather a sign that there is something wrong.
It is a common symptom in the West, and affects one in every six adults (more women than men). In most cases, it is due to an intestinal problem, although it may also be caused by problems in the colon or rectum.
Keys for improving intestinal activity
The most common causes are poor diet, lack of physical exercise, low water intake and stress. A good way of improving intestinal circulation is to change your daily habits.
- Eat a balanced diet
Switch from insoluble fibre (cereals) that may cause flatulence, to soluble fibre (fruits and vegetables), which will help to move your intestine. Add artichokes, pomegranates, kiwis, oranges, and pears to your diet, all of which contain a lot of fibre. Also, try to eat at regular times.
- Increase your fluid intake
It is important you drink plenty of water for correct intestinal functioning. The body needs at least two litres of water a day, although you need even more when it is hot or when you are doing exercise.
- Exercise
A sendentary lifestyle is another enemy of good intestinal health. Physical exercise stimulates peristaltic movements (intestinal contractions and relaxation) and improves transit.
- Take your time.
It is a good idea to set aside a regular time for bowel movements, according to your daily routine. You can educate your intestine: the best time is just after you get up, or after lunch.
- Avoid laxatives.
In the long term, using laxatives makes the body lazy and you may become dependent on them and be unable to go without them. What’s more, laxatives and suppositories should only be used under medical supervision.
Remember, the best way of preventing constipation is to set a timetable for going to the bathroom, good hydration and eating plenty of fibre.
