Tips for dealing with a cough
Use natural remedies to deal with this annoying symptom
A cough is a reflex action that clears respiratory tract of mucous, irritants such as dust or pieces of food or which is caused by irritation of the larynx or pharynx.
However, some coughs can become very annoying and can stop sufferers from falling asleep and interfere seriously with our daily lives.
We have some tips for helping you to stop your cough.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
This will help you to stop the mucous in the throat from drying out and relieve the tickling sensation. Drinking some infusions such as camomile, which is good for relieving a dry cough, ginger and mint may help. Linden tea, which also has an expectorant effect, helps to remove mucous. Liquorice, thyme and eucalyptus are good, too.
- Steam.
When the cough is caused by mucous blocking the upper respiratory tract, inhaling steam from boiling water with salt or eucalyptus will unblock the nostrils so that you can stop breathing through your mouth and relieve your sore throat and cough.
A hot shower may have a similar effect by helping to open the airways and allowing you to breathe more easily. If you do this before you go to bed, it will be easier to fall asleep.
- Elevate your head when sleeping.
If you find sleeping with two pillows uncomfortable, put a rolled-up towel under the mattress to raise your head a little and allow you to breathe more easily.
- Humidify the environment.
Dry air irritates the throat and may make you cough. Use a humidifier or place a container of water on the radiator.
- Keep dust under control.
Ventilate the room to keep the air clean every day and prevent suspended dust. Wipe surfaces with a damp cloth, avoid carpets and use your vacuum cleaner.
If your cough persists or is very serious, see your doctor before taking specific remedies such as syrups containing codeine or anti-inflammatories for your throat. Your doctor will advise you correctly depending on the origin or type of cough.
